Attacked a far superior Japanese Fleet consisting of four battleships, eight heavy crusiers and other light cruisers and destroyers. Facing superior firepower Commander Evans advanced on the Japanese Fleet, failure meant that MacArthurs troops on shore would be cut off. With this he turned to the attack. This words to the crew were ''This will be a fight against overwhelming odds from which survival cannot be expected.'' With those words Commander Evans, his crew and ship went into the annals of Naval History. Commander Evans was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions. He went down with his ship.
