OK, all you experts on junk food, or as sports fans and movie goers like to call it, one of the basic food groups.
For Potato Chips it was George Crum, a Native-American.
In the summer of 1853 George was working as a chef in an elegant resort in Saratoga Springs, NY. The Moon Lake lodge. One of the dinner guests who's last name is rumored to be Vanderbuilt, found George's French Fries to thick for his liking and rejected the order. George decided to rile the guest and with fries too thin and crisp to skewer with a fork. The plan backfired. The guest was ecstatic over the browned paper-thin potatoes and other diners began requesting Crums's potato chips.
In 1860 George opened his own restaurant ''Crumb's House'' where he catered to upscale cliental such as the Vanderbuilts and Goulds. One of the attractions of the restaurant was that every table had a basket of ''potato chip''...George closed his restaurant in 1890 and died in 1914.
The industry that George Crum launched in 1853 continues to grow and prosper. U.S. Retail sales of potato chips are over $6 Billion a year. In 2003 the U.S. potato chip industry employed more than 65,000 people.
There you have the history of the ''Potato Chip,'' Just think if George didn't invent the Potato Chip, we all might be eating veggies at sporting events and the movies. Thank goodness for George Crum, he saved us junk food addicts from a fate worst then death.
It has been rumored that we also invented the ''Couch Potato'' this is unconfirmed and is being investigated by your stalwart reporter as we speak.
Popcorn;
Another staple of the junk food group. Sports fans and movie goer's rejoice, I have again discovered what great human being saved our bacon, so to speak. Again it was Native-Americans, the oldest discovery of ''Popcorn'' dates back 5,000 years to 3,,600 B.C. in a archaeological site in New Mexico. It seems that the Navajo were eating popcorn long before movies, although they did take the popcorn to the local sporting event which I believe was an early form of football. The Navajos called it ''I want my contract renegotiated.''
So all Junk Food Junkies, there you have it. Two of our ''must have'' foods were invented by Native-Americans. Destroying another myth that we were primitive savages. You may now resume munching and crunching.
A quote from Winston Churchill ''Never have so many owed so much to so few.''
