The DOJ is now monitoring the Patty Dawson case. She is receiving much support from the NA community.

“We need to stress the federal obligation to the safety of American Indians. We now know of five cases like Patty’s in the West where our people have been attacked. AIM-WEST will be making inquiries to initiate a national hot line for people to call in hate crime attacks of this nature.”

Man up America.

Thankfully, it MAY finally be getting the attention it deserves, but let's see if everyone follows through! Any and every group affiliated with Justice for Native Peoples needs to investigate this issue, from top level on down! Maybe there are some Law Enforcement folks that also need to be investigated, especially since she saw one of the other perpetrators in the court room and nothing was done! Yes, this IS racial AND a Hate Crime! :-(

Thanks for stopping by Nookomis. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it's a duck...Seems that the local DA can't figure out what a duck is.

Gunderson allegedly told Dawson that he “didn’t see a hate crime here.”

I wonder what he did see? It looks like a hate crime to me. If not hate, then what was the motivation?

It is good that the Department of Justice is monitoring the case. I monitor a lot of things, but I take action on very few things which I monitor.

The federal government needs to be more aggressive in these situations

Al, thanks for stopping by. Gunderson has blinders on, which is not unusual in that area.

Let's hope that the DOJ monitoring produces some justice for Patty Dawson.

Kavika, thanks for the updated article. I wish I were close enough to attend the hearing and give Patty Dawson my support in person.

Then again, with my anger management problems, it's likely best I'm not there. My blood is boiling as I type this.

I hope Patty receives the justice she deserves, but it sounds like it will be a hard struggle.

screminmimi, now that the DOJ is involved let's hope that thing will be on a level playing field for Patty and she gets the justice that she deserves.

I hope it is the local Assistant US AG. I have zero confidence left in the home office.

Local AG's are appointed by the President, are they not? Isn't he a member of a racial minority, that President?

grump, what is the relevance of your question? These appointments are usually political rather than racial. As long as the law is adhered to, it doesn't matter.

Lee, the relevance is that a President who is a member of a racial minority should be aware of the struggles of other members of minority groups. One would think, maybe. An outside chance, perhaps, that his administration would take an interest in this and other cases where racial minorities are targeted by groups such as this?

I know that the law should be all that matters.

I want a president who looks after all the people regardless of any other consideration than that they are people.

Lee, me too. Apply the laws that already are on the books. But if the laws are being ignored in this part of California because the victims are NA? What does that say about the people who we trust to protect us and who should be enforcing the laws.

I agree with you completely. Enforce the laws equally, no matter what the race of the victim.

I am not in favor of the hate crime enhancements on laws, for the most part. Just enforce the laws.

It would be great if this made it toTV, to let the "Hate Mongers" know that they are wise to them, and they better clean up their act. (like I said, it wold be great, one can hope can't they?") I

It's way past time that all of this crap stopped !!

Maybe that should be a new "reality" show. Instead of having plastic people have the real world of hate crimes for everyone to see every week.

Pat, that idea could probably wake the general public up to the problem that exists. Without media coverage it just keeps getting swept under the rug.
