This is an update on an article that was posted by monkeyman.

It seems that people everywhere are upset at this young lady being suspended from playing in a basketball game because she spoke her native language in class.

There is a petition, if you support her please take the time to sign it.

Signed Kavika, with pleasure. And, with comments.

(I have dealt with unresponsive, unresponsible parochial adminstrators before. This is why we now use a public school.)

Thanks for visiting and signing the petition James Essayist.

It's amazing that the school is 60% Native American and this type of crap happens...

Kavika, thanks for giving us the chance to sigh the petition, and stand with the little girl.

Because of where I am I cannot open the article or the petition so I am unable to know all the facts. However, if the fault in this issue lies only with the teacher then he/she should be fired for idiocy if for no other reason. If it is a school policy then it is a travesty. Cultural heritage and tradition should not only be permitted, but encouraged. The "melting pot" may be acceptable to prevent lawlessness, but it would be a crying shame to turn all American students into homogonized milk.

Buzz, thanks for visiting. Actually two teahers were involved, one with an anger management problem. It did not mention if it was school policy, but I would doubt it. The student body is 60% Native American. It was a Catholic School, which by many Indian standards is bad to start with, since they ran the ''Boarding Schools'' the NA children were forced to go to.

Many years ago there was a similar problem in Canada where native children were taken from their homes and put into Catholic boarding schools by the government. I believe it happened mostly in Manitoba.

Actually Buzz it was all over Canada and they were called ''Residential Schools'' Canada like the U.S. is still trying to live down the horror of those schools..They existed from 1880 until 1980...There are many reports/article/history of them. The Amnesty International report is very difficult to read. Sexual abuse, torture, forced labor and murder was the order of the day in these schools. They were run for the governments by religions groups. Catholic mostly. The law suits are still coming from this.

You would think that with 60% of the student NA's that the teacher would understand, but then again they are the ones that ran most of the boarding schools, so it's to be expected.

    Done.

The school should be supporting the use of the language by offering classes.

The teachers should learn how to say "I Love You" in Miranda's native language and tell each kid that every day. But, maybe they don't love any of those kids.

60% of the kids in that school are Native Americans.

Yes, 60% being NA and the teachers and school have no idea what there saying...Well, it does sound like the boarding schools that they ran.

What? Suspended for speaking her native language. It seems like half the people in this country can't speak English. I am not trying to be critical of those struggling to learn English, but there are a lot of people in this country who don't even seem to be trying very hard, if at all.

So they have chosen to pick on the weakest of us, our Native American brothers and sisters. The ones who don't have mass protests, the ones who don't start fires in anguish, the ones who don't loot and rob to have their voice heard, the ones who don't Native American pride parades, the ones who quietly wait in patience for justice. Native Americans wait so patiently it is almost as though they accept their second, no third class treatment. This negative treatment should have stopped generations ago.

For what ever good it will do, of course, I will sign (again).

My thanks to you, Kavika, and monkeyman.

I grew up hearing many Eastern European languages. It encouraged me to take a language other than English in high school. The world wide destruction of cultures other than western has to stop. I watched several time on PBS of Native children and the horrors of schools to westernize them.

Petition signed. This young lady should not have had to suffer.

Carolyn, thank you for visiting and for signing the petition.

It's amazing that with a student body of 60% Native American that this would happen.

We'll make it more difficult to ''sweep it under the rug'' with the petition, and outrage for all over their butts are going to be burning before it's over.

The Indians did the beating for a change instead of GETTING BEAT.

I'm sorry, but I think it's funny as heck. This Senator tried to tell two Senecas who were arguing in the lobby of the casino to calm down, sticking his nose in where did not belong. When they found out who he was, both Senecas and the two women with them ended up beating the crap out of the Senator and his wife.

Several people posting on the thread are saying they doubt the Senator just told them to calm down; they think he may have tossed out some racial slurs. At any rate, he obviously thought his position gave him the authority to tell these "savages" to shut up, but they were on their own ground, and didn't take too kindly to his interference.
