XL Pipeline vs Natural Resources Defense Council

On Monday, February 13th, the environmental community united behind the ambitious goal of generating 500,000 letters to the Senate in 24 hours against the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. The goal was surpassed in seven (7) hours.

By noon on Tuesday, more than 800,000 had made their voices heard in the U.S. Senate. Yesterday afternoon, every one of those letters was hand delivered to Capitol Hill.

Thanks to everyone who is fighting against the pipeline.

Here is a nice piece written by Robert Redford with some interesting facts about the proposed pipeline.

Kavika, thanks for the post, I did sign that petition plus others. gillanator, thanks for the excellent article by Redford, too many US citizens really have no idea what the pipeline is all about, who it will enrich, and how little good it would do here. Also, Credo.com, has a petition to stop the gassing and poisening of the Canadian wolves, to clear the area around the tar pits. There are so many things people should know, before we endanger our precious aqufier which provides water for our farms and towns, for big oil, again. Fight back and pass your knowledge around.

michelle, thanks for visiting.

The more light that is shown on the pipeline and the damage that it is causing the more people will join the fight against it.

The tar pit themselves are destroying thousands of acres of pristine forest, polluting rivers and harming people. This must be stopped.

It is a sad day that people have to petition Congress because they won't listen. :(

I opposed drilling in ANWR many years ago for the same reasons-philosophically-being that we have to move forward with the development of alternatives and renewables, for many good reasons, not the least being that we need to be a leader in those emerging technologies. Sure, there will be setbacks, but that shouldn't deter us from holding to what is in our long-term intersets.

The hardest thing is to start changing-eventually, it will become habit. We may even bring back a renewed conservation ethic. I'm very glad to here this news.

as it is there are 3 reasons to oppose this

  1. the environment
  2. the fact that it is still foreign oil
  3. there are better sources of energy for the world

its all opposed to the good things they say about it

have to disagree with the foreign oil argument a bit... not the foreign part, but the fact that Canada is actually a respectable country in this world. Its not such a bad thing to help a good neighbor out. However, if the environment is at risk for a resource that should, honestly not be needed in this day and age, there just isn't enough justification for it.

It is not oil, the XL Pipeline is designed to carry a water slurry of Bitumen, tar sands asphalt, please, tell people it is not oil. The water is so toxic, the Canadians will not allow it to cross their soil. This is just a crazy idea, if it was really oil, maybe, but it is tar with billions of gallons of highly contaminated water.

ncs, thanks for visiting. Agreed, Canada is a good neighbor, but there is no need for this pipeline to cross the U.S. There is little for us to gain from it and a hell of a lot to be lost.

Jensen, thanks for visiting. I've posted a couple of article on what it really is. It seems that it's taken on the oil name with most people. As you said it is not oil, and is very toxic.

Between the Sierra Club, MoveOn and other involved organizations, I've signed so many petitions against this pipeline, I'm afraid that my name is in someone's book! :)

I called my Rep....BIG mistake, as he's an oil & gas guy...who, when voted out, before being voted back in, worked as a lobbyist for the big oil companies.

No, I don't think that it was a big mistake, at least he knows how you feel. If enough people did it perhaps it would put some pressure on him.

Way to kill a bunch of trees with all those letters. Maybe the tree huggers can get together and write a petition and get 800000 signatures against petitions being on paper.

Good Article, Kavika. I sent an email to both of my Senators requesting to squelch the XL pipeline due to environmental concerns and amount of Co2 and energy used to refine the tar sands. I have major concerns that the GOP will use this as a means to demonstrate that Obama is not interested in creating jobs. I only hope that American people can see through this fallacy.
