Dogwood Canyon Nature Park, a private wilderness refuge, is Johnny Morris' special commitment to nature. Johnny Morris is the founded of Bass Pro Shops and is from Springfield MO.
The property encompasses some 2,200 acres of stirring Ozark's beauty. Little Indian Creek, drains into
Dogwood Creek and flows through the preserve. Native Rainbow trout abound, as do many other creatures
natural to the area. Walking and riding trails cover most of the park that lies mostly in Missouri but with a
section of it in Arkansas.
One of the most interesting areas of the park is the rich history of Native Americans that lived here.
Archeological investigations have documented burial sites at the Great Spirit Rock Shelter and Indian Burial
Cave. Radiocarbon dating has revealed what is believed to be the oldest human remains ever found in the
state of Missouri (6000 B.C.)
Fire Pit Cave contained rare stone beads, a well preserved hearth. Arrow and dart points, pottery shards,
and flint tools. Careful consideration has been given to the proper treatment and care of these discoveries.
If you ever in the area (Branson is 25 miles) be sure to take the time to visit.
I've posted a few photos taken yesterday on a short visit.
Since the Preserve is only seven miles from our home we have yearly passes.
