Today we see dogs being used to seek out drugs, weapons and various other uses.
The history of War Dogs goes back to WWI, when Sgt. Stubbie was credited with saving his unit from a gas attack and capturing a German spy.
WWII, Korea, Viet Nam and today's conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan our four legged friends show their devotion and courage everyday.
Sniffing out bombs, guarding compounds, tracking the enemy and just being a friend in a combat zone.
During the Viet Nam war one of the saddest chapters in Military history occurred. The Military decided that the dogs being used in Viet Nam were excess military equipment and thousands were left behind to die when we pulled out. Tour after tour in combat zones, saving American lives they were thought of as nothing but equipment and left to die.
Today the view of our War Dogs is very different, they are held in high regard by all the services and are treated with the respect that they deserve.
Soon there will be a ''National War Dog Memorial''. It will be at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, the home for War Dogs and their training base.
